Slackers on a jeep trip through a hot country full of bad-tempered people, a nasty trick played on a vegetarian, two off-duty conscripts and a mysterious man on the sand. My story Pavlov's Dogs is in this month's #WritingRawmagazine, and can be read here.

Hm, good tale, but kind of miserable. I think I know somebody this happened to, or a similar thing, in Morrocco, I think. I think we may be thinking of the same person! But I know, you told me, you just make them all up! It is probably not something that happened to you, or it wouldn't have anything funny in it. Now going to read the new one.

I guess it is a bit miserable. Good guess about Morocco - I did have it in mind. I didn't really make this story up in the usual way. I went out with somebody that it happened to - at least, the aggressive soldiers bit. She also saw the man on the beach. I think I imagined the bag. The other story in it was told to me by my South African friend Colin. He was in a restaurant - I forget where - and the raw meat under the omelette incident happened. He was a pescaterian, and he was sure a waiter had done it to annoy one of his group, who was a vegetarian and maybe kept on about it. Colin grabbed the plate with the raw meat, and dumped it on the next table. I didn't include that, as I wanted it to be short. I asked him did they complain, and he said it wasn't worth it, and he was hungry, and the people who worked there were miserable... So there are two stories here, told to me by two different people.

It's not a miserable tale really because the outcome is good for Carie, even though she is friendless in the moment. After the story is the real tale because she will escape from a damaged relationship and from friends who are nagative. It seems to be against vegetarians, which is true for a countries of north Africa in general. In fact, not against vegetarians, but it is not their culture. The soldier boys are very real, in fact. There are also many characters like Carrie and her friends everywhere, with unrealistic expectations, maybe.

Thanks, Jan. See my comments above. Yeah, Carrie and her friends were indeed optimistic, if not idealistic, and maybe to be both you need to be unrealistic, sometimes.
